Increasingly, Toledo gets mentioned as one of the country’s top zoos. Families aren’t surprised; they’ve been talking it up for decades. In addition to the animal exhibits, which range from birds and reptiles to big cats and great apes, the zoo also has a science museum, a conservatory and formal gardens, not to mention one of the country’s largest aquariums. Over the past 10 or so years, Toledo Zoo has added several major exhibits, in many cases renovating old buildings to maintain the zoo’s stately, historic feel.   There’s also some local color: “Frogtown, U.S.A.,” is a nocturnal exhibit that houses some 50 frogs representing the 10 species that inhabit the Toledo area. Families learn the songs and habits of their hometown frogs, as well as how to save these irrepressible hoppers from extinction.  Best of all, despite the incredible diversity of things to see and do, families can experience everything in a single day without running the little ones ragged.

The University of Michigan Exhibit Museum of Natural History’s main attraction is the Hall of Evolution which traces 600 million years of life on Earth through fossils, models, and dioramas. In the Michigan Wildlife Gallery, there’s a large collection of native Great Lakes birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians, with taxidermy mounts and habitat scenes. Great ways for families to explore the museum are the downloadable themed scavenger hunts on the Web site.  1109 Geddes Ave., tel. 734-764-0478. www.lsa.umich.edu/exhibitmuseum. Open Mon. to Sat., 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sun., noon to 5 p.m. Free admission for groups of 10 or fewer.
